Everyone tells you to "use a VPN" — few explain what that actually means. Here's the encrypted tunnel, the IP masking and the fine print, in plain language.

What is a VPN?

A VPN — Virtual Private Network is an app that creates a private, encrypted connection between your device and the internet. Instead of your phone talking directly to every website and service (with your network provider watching in the middle), your traffic travels inside a protected tunnel to a VPN server first, and only then out to the internet.

Two things change the moment you connect:

  • Your traffic is encrypted. Anyone on the same network — or your internet provider — sees scrambled data instead of what you're doing.
  • Your IP address is masked. Websites and advertisers see the VPN server's IP address, not the one that identifies your home or phone.

How does a VPN work, step by step?

You don't need to understand the cryptography to use a VPN, but the mechanics are simpler than they sound:

  1. You tap connect. The VPN app negotiates a secure session with a VPN server and proves its identity.
  2. An encrypted tunnel is established. From this point on, everything leaving your device is encrypted before it touches the network.
  3. The server relays your traffic. It decrypts your requests, forwards them to the internet and sends the responses back through the tunnel.
  4. The internet sees the server, not you. Your real IP address, rough location and network provider stay hidden behind the server's address.

What a VPN doesn't do

A VPN is a powerful privacy tool, but honest expectations matter:

  • It doesn't make you fully anonymous. If you log into an account, that service knows it's you. Cookies and browser fingerprints also survive a VPN.
  • It doesn't replace HTTPS. A VPN adds protection on top of the encryption websites already use — it doesn't excuse entering passwords on shady sites.
  • It doesn't block malware. Be as careful with downloads and links as you would be without a VPN.
  • It shifts trust to your VPN provider. The network can no longer see your traffic — but the VPN server can. That's why the provider's logging policy matters so much (more in our no-logs VPN guide).

Rule of thumb: a VPN protects the path between you and the internet. What you deliberately hand over — logins, forms, permissions — is still up to you.

When should you actually use a VPN?

For most people, four situations cover 95% of the value:

  • Public Wi-Fi. Cafés, airports and hotels are shared with strangers. Encryption keeps them from watching your traffic — see our public Wi-Fi safety guide.
  • Everyday privacy. Your ISP can see every site you visit and can legally monetize that data in many countries. A VPN takes that visibility away.
  • Travel. Reach the apps, banking and content from home when networks abroad restrict them.
  • IP-based tracking. Your IP address reveals your rough location and is used to profile you across sites. Hiding it breaks a key tracking link.

  • A strict no-logs policy — the provider shouldn't record your browsing history, traffic destinations or real IP address.
